Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, (CFS) – It is also known as Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome, (CFIDS) or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). Symptoms are characterized by "flu-like symptoms" such as sore throat, fever, chills; tender neck or armpit lymph nodes; un-refreshing or non restorative sleep; headaches and post-exertion malaise lasting more than 24 hours. These symptoms are accompanied by severe and incapacitating fatigue not alleviated by rest; body-wide muscle and joint pain; cognitive impairment such as brain fog and short term memory loss and have lasted longer than 6 months.

What is Fibromyalgia Syndrome?
Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) or Fibromyalgia (FM) is a condition characterized by body-wide muscle pains, tender points, sleep disturbance, cognitive impairments (fibro-fog or brain fog) and overwhelming fatigue. Many (but not all) other symptoms associated with FM are subjective swelling, joint pain, and non-restorative sleep and migraine headaches. It is believed to be a condition that affects the central nervous system (CNS).

Other conditions which overlap considerably with CFS and FM are: 1) Gulf War Syndrome (GWS) also called Gulf War Illness. It is a medical condition found in many veterans returning from the previous gulf war. It is also characterized by intense fatigue, unrefreshed sleep, headache and joint pain, cognitive impairments including short term memory lapses and lack of concentration. Veterans also report nausea, dizziness and often suffer from respiratory disorders. 2) Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is an illness characterized by high and debilitating sensitivity to chemicals in the environment (air, fabrics, food and water).

Latest scientific research indicates that all of these illnesses are Neuroendocrineimmune Disorders, thus affecting the neurological, the endocrinological and the immune systems.

In English - CFS – An Invisible Illness

In Spanish - El síndrome de fatiga crónica, una enfermedad invisible y debilitante
